LOTANNA POV π³π¬
LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA.
"Wo ni things ti won
"Won lomo won…….
"Twe, twe, twe, twe, twe, twe
"Twerk your body…..
"I dey wait, I dey wait now."
"Lota" Lanre called.
"LOTA!" He yelled even louder. Why was he disturbing me? couldn't he see I was listening to Kizz Daniel? I resolved not to answer him. Suddenly, my ear piece was snatched roughly from me. I opened my eyes to see Lanre's angry face.
"Ode, passengers are coming and Baba Nneka is already taking all of them away, E be like say money no dey sweet you abi?"
At that I stood up immediately, Kizz Daniel will have to wait, money was more important right now and he would definitely not give that to me. I ran with Lanre to our position at the bus stop. Truly, Baba Nneka had already taken half of them, he got one over me this time, but not for long.
I overheard the passengers saying that he should drive already and stop waiting for customers since his bus was already half full. Perfect, this was my opening. Luckily for me Baba Nneka went to get more passengers, poor old man didn't know what was about to happen.
"Fine Girls and boys ah ah. See as una dey hot anyhow. Don't wait for this old man. That's how he is oh, if all of you enter my bus now, I'll take you straight. I'm not as greedy as him." I said giving them my most charming smile.
The passengers looked at each other, nodding amongst themselves. They all started coming down, Lanre led them to the bus. As we were about to leave. Baba Nneka turned screaming.
"HEY! NDI OSHI(Thieves), YOU PEOPLE STOLE MY PASSENGERS, WICKED BOYS!" He said as we drove away. Lanre and I couldn't help but laugh.
"BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME BABA, DONT BE TOO GREEDY AGAIN INUGO?" I said laughing.
After the days work, Lanre and I split the money like we usually do.
"We earned a lot today ohh." I said smiling.
"Yes, we did" Lanre said looking uncomfortable.
"What is it?" I said.
"Nothing my guy, its just that, I can't believe we won't work together again since you'll be travelling to the UK tomorrow. I don't even know why you showed up today to help me." Lanre said.
"Is it a bad thing to have one more day with my friend? I wanted to do this. I wanted to spend my last night with my best friend. Remember I'll be gone for a year. Who knows when I'll see you next." I said hitting his head like I usually would.
"I'll miss you sha and the way we both make Baba Nneka frustrated everytime." He said laughing.
"I'll miss you too, Ewu(Goat)." I smiled after saying that.
"Guy no dey insult me." Lanre hit my back.
"Safe journey brother, take care of yourself." Lanre said hugging me and after, disappearing Into the night.
Lanre has been my best friend since our University days, while he studied engineering, I studied law. We've been inseparable from our first to our last year. We met at the freshers orientation and took each others numbers after finding out we both live in lagos not that far from each other.
After our NYSC, we tried finding jobs but to no avail. We became bus drivers to earn a little change. Lanres father owned a rundown bus, we fixed it and then started using it to make some money to feed and take care of our basic needs. I couldn't imagine that a 25 year old, First class graduate of law like me would end up driving buses for a living but that is what life gave to me. Until fortune decided to smile upon me.
Three months ago, I applied for an internship in the UK and Luckily for me, I was among the few that were chosen. I had to pay a fee of 200,000 naira to the firm so everything would be arranged for me when I get there including accommodation. Or so they stated. I worked hard every day to be able to raise the money until I was able to pay the fee.
After that, I started saving money for a plane ticket and now I'm on my way to fulfil my dreams of being a lawyer. Lanre was a bit skeptical about it, asking me if I was sure it was legit. I shunned it off knowing that this couldn't possibly be a trick, everything looked so real. He dropped the topic and supported me. As an orphan, life hasn't been easy for me. I had to train myself through school and this has not been an easy feat. I would take the risk of the internship if that meant I could get ahead.
UNITED KINGDOM, LONDON
"We landed one hour ago" I said taking to Lanre on the phone.
"Lanre, this place fine ohhhhh." I said, laughing like a kid with candy.
"You think say e go dey like Niger?" Lanre disclosed hissing.
"Shut up." Lanre just laughed at my statement.
"Has the firm called you?" He asked.
"Not yet, but I'm planing on going there now." I said.
"Oya na, when you reach call me." He said.
"Sure thing." I answered.
After I got off the phone, I took a taxi to the location that was sent to me. But there was a problem, the property was empty.
"Sir, I don't think this is the place." I said to the white old man. He stared at me like I had grown four heads.
"This is the place mister, now if you'd pay me so I can get on with my business, I'd appreciate it." He said with a strong British accent.
"Sorry sir." I gave him his money and got down, I tried dailing the numbers that were given to me but they were all disconnected or they did not exist. It was then I knew that Lanre was right.
I've been duped.
"CHINEKE!" ( GOD!)
