GEEGPAY WRITING CHALLENGE  Picture credit: Unsplash My name is Amina and life has been terrible to me. A 25 year old and I still haven't achieved my dreams. My five year plan failed woefully. If I knew then what I knew now, I wouldn't even have wasted my time drafting that plan in the first place. Out of the things that I wrote down that I wanted to achieve, the most important of them all was to be a photographer. Photography is my dream, but it seemed like that dream won't ever be actualized. I trained very hard just to learn about it. When I was finally close to actualizing my dreams, it seemed like the stars weren't on my side. I was offered an internship at a prestigious photography school a year ago. I sent in my portfolio and luckily, they liked it. My mother was so happy for me when she heard it but then… Tragedy struck a few months before I was supposed to travel. My mum fell seriously ill and that was how I lost my dream. I grew up with a single mother. We were...

BROWN & GREY: FINALE

BELLION POV. As we got to the house, I started getting scared of confronting my father. But as soon as Lota placed his hands on top of mine I regained my confidence again. We walked into the foyer, holding hands. I saw my father sitting on the couch, luckily he wasn't drunk this time. Like the other times on my birthday.  "Bellion, its good that you're here, I wanted to discuss with you about the wedding guest list, there are some people I want out of it." He practically demanded. "There will be no need for that, I'm not going through with the wedding." I said confidently and Lota gave my hand a squeeze. My father stood up having a sinister look on his face. "I'll take that as a joke." He said. "It's not a joke, I'm se.." before I could complete my statement, my dad kicked the lamp away from the table and broke it. Lota pulled me behind him to protect me from the shards. "DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I'VE PUT INTO THIS ...

BROWN & GREY: CHAPTER 6

BELLION POV It's been ten months and the wedding planning is almost about to end. In two weeks I'll be a married woman. Its also been ten months since Lota has been working for me and I've been getting to know him better. Each day spent with him makes me happier, he's been teaching me a little bit of his language. Just the simple details though and also how to drive, I've been learning really quickly.  I've also been introduced to more food like Abacha and Achicha. Even though we still argue about it sometimes. I still think that Achicha is better. I find myself liking him more each day.  Lota was going to france in two weeks as well, one of my contacts pulled through, he was going to start his internship soon. I will miss him a lot though. Lota is a kind man, caring, respectful and he treats me like I matter. Like I'm not irrelevant. But I couldn't forget that I was marrying Kai, I needed my father to be proud of me, I wanted him to see my worth. So i...

BROWN & GREY: CHAPTER 5

Image
BELLION POV As I took a stroll in the garden, the memories of last night kept filtering into my brain. The look of disappointment in dad's eyes etched into it like a bad movie.  Maybe I should've just stayed in the restaurant a little longer. Maybe then dad wouldn't have been so mad at me. But then I remembered what Lotanna said about me having no fault in the matter, part of me wanted to believe him but after what dad said, I didn't know what to believe about myself anymore. I was so confused. I didn't have long to think when I saw Kai and Lota talking, they both looked quite irritated with each other.  I walked towards them and as I got closer I knew I had to break the tension. "What's going on here?" I asked. Both Lota and Kai turned to look at me. "Bellion " Kai said walking towards me, he touched my cheek and gave me a peck on the forehead. He's never done that before. "Your new help didn't know who I was. I was just clea...

BROWN & GREY: CHAPTER 4

Image
BELLION POV As we rode the Uber, Lotanna told me all about his University days and his friend Lanre. It took me a while to finally pronounce his name right though. I also told him some few details about myself, I haven't mentioned Kai. I didn't want this moment to end, this little time of happiness I had.  I have never laughed this much in a long time but Lota seems to make me do so effortlessly. He let me be myself around him, the only person I've only talked to this much was Kayla. The Uber took us home. As we got down Lota gawked at the house like a deer caught in headlights. "Come on, let's introduce you to my father." I said laughing at the expression on his face. "I know on our way here you told me your father was rich but I didn't think it was this much. Talking to you one wouldn't guess that you're this wealthy, you are so modest Asa." He said. Even though he still hasn't told me the meaning of the name, I was determined to fi...

BROWN & GREY: CHAPTER 3

LOTANNA POV After absorbing the shock, I finally left the property with my luggage. Where would I go to now? I had no relatives here, I was stranded and worst of all? I was broke. "Chineke, kedu udiri onwuwa but nka"( God, what type of temptation is this.) I sighed silenty. I started walking aimlessly, my phone battery was dead so I couldn't call Lanre to deliver the bad news, he'd probably shove it in my face that he was right and I was wrong.  It was already nighttime here in London, as I passed people kept giving me weird glances, well I wouldn't blame them. As I was still thinking about my predicament, I heard a voice screaming. "Hey! Get back here, you thief."  Fortunately the theif ran into me, I dragged him by the collar and hit his head several times, throwing insults in Igbo language. The boy didn't look more than 18 years old, I took the purse and let him go.  As I turned I saw the lady gawking at me. She wasn't that tall but she was b...
